China's Mandarin Only Policy

The Chinese government cracked down on English language schools in China. The government has proclaimed that Chinese only need to learn, read, write, and speak Mandarin. There is no need to learn Cantonese or any other dialect and there is no need to learn English. However, the kids of the Chinese elite learn English and frequently study abroad for college and/or graduate school, primarily in the US and UK. Even Ping Pong’s daughter speaks English fluently and studied abroad at Harvard.

So why does the communist party not want the Chinese people to learn English? After all, English is the international language of law and business. Because it’s more difficult to control the citizens if they can read, write, and speak English. Especially since most English speaking countries have freedom of speech.

In addition, if the Chinese government mandated English education, as does the Japanese government and many other countries around the world, the government would have to admit that it doesn’t have enough qualified English teachers. Do you really think the communist party would ever admit that it has a shortage of anything or cannot provide something to its citizens? Of course not.
