The most prosperous part of China was Hong Kong. Why is that? Because Hong Kong had the least influence from the Chinese government. Hong Kong, under British rule, had freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and many other freedoms. In addition, it was a world financial center on par with New York, London, and Tokyo. When China took over Hong Kong in 1997, it was just a matter of time before all the freedoms were eroded and it lost its status as a world financial center. It’s an interesting side note that rich Chinese would frequently travel to Hong Kong to have an abortion or give birth to an additional child, both of which were illegal in mainland China.
The communist party had no choice but to crack down on Hong Kong. How does it look for the Chinese government when the most successful part of China is not administered by China? The least communist part of China was the most prosperous and most successful. It’s hard to sell communism to the citizens when the most successful part of China is the least communist. If China ever successfully invades Taiwan, its citizens will suffer a similar fate as Hong Kong.
